When Is It Ok To Send Flowers To Employees?

In today’s politically correct world, there are only a very few occasions when sending flowers to an employee is acceptable. With the litigious nature of some people, regardless of where you live, whether it’s in Houston, Dallas or Cincinnatti flowers given to someone at work could be a very dangerous thing indeed. With all of those warnings, there are still some times when being able to send flowers to employees is not only acceptable, it’s encouraged.

While sending flowers to an employee for any reason that is acceptable is very limited, there are some that are appropriate. Most have to do with congratulating the employee for an outside reason like congratulations for a baby or a child who graduates high school or college. It can be appropriate to send an employee flowers as a congratulations on a promotion or a completion of a course of study for advancement. Other than that, sending flowers to an employee outside of Secretary’s Day for almost any other reason is frowned upon by the HR department.

Another thing to keep in mind is the type of flowers being sent by florists. Most flowers have a very specific meaning about them that can make them inappropriate to be sent, regardless of the intent or reason. Roses especially have no real reason to be sent to any employee under most any circumstance. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, but there are no real reasons to do so. That means anyone sending flowers to another employee has to not only be well aware of the reasons you can and can’t send flowers, but they also have to be well aware of what kinds of flowers that can be sent.

Even good friends have to be careful. The main focus should be that although friendship develop friendships in the workplace, that relationship shouldn’t afftect their performance. It isn’t even really a good idea for friends who are also employees to send them for birthdays or for the holidays. Too many people could feel that office funds were spent to acquire the gifts and even worse, that some kind of favoritism is involved.  That interoffice jealousy can peak when a romantic relationship develops. Romantic relationships do occur even when clearly against HR rules. Unfortunately, any flowers that are to be given between partners have to take place outside of the office.

Make sure that the reason and type of flowers given to employees are right. Many people have ended up loosing jobs because of the difficultly in these situations and their lack of knowledge and appropriateness. A little time and effort spent in understanding the limitations can save a lot of headaches and heartaches later.
