Want to Start on EBay? Read This First
For many people, starting their own online business can seem an insurmountable problem; if this describes you, eBay may be the place to test the waters of eBay home business. First, it is a great testing ground for trying your hand at selling; second, there is practically no risk to you; and third, you have a chance to feel what it’s like to earn a little business income. Before you get going, however, I’d like to take a moment to discuss some of aspects of eBay It think you be aware of before you start putting up auctions.
First, take time to consider what product line you want to sell–if you don’t know, don’t worry as I’ll talk about that; it is enough that you are simply excited about selling on eBay. As eBay is a fluid and flexible selling environment, you don’t have to lock yourself into one particular niche, but when starting out you do want to pick a fairly narrow product niche and then develop that line. You can always add different product lines, but start out in just one area to begin with. The advantage is that buyers will associate you with the products you sell and return to your auctions if they’ve had a good eBay experience with you. Again, this is important because people will show their loyalty to you by spending money on your auctions–if people like the collectible super heroes you sell, believe me, word will spread to other collectors in your niche.
The usual advice given to eBay newbies who don’t know what to sell is to choose something they are familiar with. However, I would take that with a grain of salt. That is easy to say and all well and good if you can convert what you know about into items for sale. But what if you can’t? Another entry point that works for many is to start with an interest or to start with something you would like to be interested in. Even if you start out not knowing very much about your products, if you are interested, the people who attend your auctions will pick that up from the descriptions you write, and that will help your auctions sell.
If you are not particularly interested in anything and not willing to be interested, then selling on eBay may not be the right choice for you. For inspiration, you can make a list of the kinds of things you like, visit stores and websites, and talk to friends and family. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, don’t worry; as I mentioned a moment ago, in the beginning it is enough to be interested, and that’s why my standard advice at this point is just to sell other peoples’ stuff–sell their junk. Don’t worry about it not selling–anything will sell on eBay, and in the beginning it does not really matter if you make a profit or not–you probably will, and I think you will be surprised at how well you do with what you had thought was just junk. The point of doing this is that after doing a few auctions the whole process will begin to make more sense, and you will be able to think more clearly about what you want to sell; and who knows, you may decide to stick with “junk,” and you wouldn’t be the only one to make a fortune doing so.
When you have decided that you do want to give eBay a try as a business, you are now ready to think about profit and which products will work for you. I would advise not worrying about mass market consumer items, such as electronics. EBay is the world’s largest flea market and as such, there is a market for nearly everything. Keep in mind that eBay is great market place for collectors–so there is a market for obscure items, and eBay is the perfect place to sell them.
If you find that you like selling and start making money, you need to know that if you are in the United States, you will have to declare it as income. You may also need to get a sales tax permit, sometimes also called a sellers permit, so that you can legally retail items to residents of your won state. The sales tax permit is the license that your state gives you that allows you to purchase wholesale items without paying sales tax; you charge your buyers from your state of residence sales tax, which you later remit to your state treasury. This is not complicated, and you can find out more information from your department of revenue.
Keep in mind that there are good days and bad days on eBay. Everyone has them. Unfortunately, no one’s auctions make a profit every time, and as a business person, you will learn how to predict losses as well as financial wins. In order to succeed–and this is really key–don’t give up and always continue to learn. Anyone with determination can make a living on eBay, and there is hardly anything that can’t be sold. It would be unrealistic to say that eBay is right for everyone or that everyone who tries will succeed, but what is true is that it is a very practical way to test the waters of business with practically no start up cost and risk to you. The next step is up to you–time to put up an auction!
