Creating a Small Business Website yourself.

It need not be costly to have a professional build a small business website for you and in theory the website will soon pay for itself in the income it generates from new sales. The thought that you could build your own website may have crossed your mind but you may not sure if it would be cost effective or not. Consider the following points. first of all, do you have the spare time required to dedicate to putting a website together? secondly, what is it you are seeking to gain from your new website?

Learning to design and build a basic business website isn’t the most difficult challenge. I by no means intend to suggest that web design isn’t an exceptionally in depth subject or that it doesn’t require a lot of study and skill but at a basic level and with a bit of applied learning you can achieve some pretty good results.

If you are the type of person who grasps and learns new skills easily, you could be good at making your own website. There are a few crucial skills that need to be gained prior to beginning a website build, these cover but are not limited to CSS, HTML and basic website design and layout.

We arrive at our first question and the root of it. Do you actually have enough spare time to materialize these skills?

You might feel that you would be happy to put the hours in to learn the basics because you are totally fed up with working for other people and would like to start up on your own. Get yourself online looking at some tutorial sites. Find and buy an up to date ‘Build Your Own Website’ book through Amazon. There is plenty available, much of which will point you in the right direction.

You may however be considering this option from a completely different situation. It may be that you are already finding there are not enough hours in your day. Building your own business website in this situation is not going to do you, your business or your family life any favours and if you aren’t focused on what you are trying to achieve then the finished product isn’t going to do your business justice.

Second question to ask yourself. What is it that you would like your new website to achieve for you? As well as answering this have a think about where you slot in to your market and have a look at the websites owned by your direct competitors.

If you run a small business as a gardener or electrician for instance, a basic website with your contact details enabling local customers to find you and give you a call may fully meet your needs. A basic website to fulfil this need is wholly achievable.

The type of business you are in however may require something more professional. Would a basic looking site portray the appropriate impression to your potential customers? Enter some search terms relevant to your business into Google. What level of quality site do your competitors have? If you feel that the standard is higher than you can realistically achieve then seeking a professional web designer may be the better option for your business.

So, to summarise; If you feel sure about your ability to build a website of a high enough quality and feel you have enough time to commit to the task, then give it a go. If you are unsure, then you should hire a professional. A last point you will need to take into consideration is that once you complete your site, it will not be of benefit to your business if people cannot find it on Google.
