There is a growing number of ‘non-traditional’ nurses who have adopted the field after a lot of work in another field. The popularity of nursing is growing.
Known as second-degree nurses, this growing group is unique to patient care. Second degree nurses are often more committed and provide a credit to the nursing industry. Great second degree nurses can come from any walk of life. A lot of these people have full degrees in other careers, but decided they wanted to do nursing. Some may have been inspired to do this based on lay-offs from other jobs, and others may have decided to give back to their community. A lot of people decide to do this because they want to make a visible difference in someone’s life. The satisfaction that you get from hands-on nursing is not like any other.
There are several options in the nursing field, such as, nursing homes, medical facilities, outpatient programs, and public health areas. You can work in research and technology, or direct patient care, or both. If you go into the occupational nursing field, you have several options of what to work with. As a home health worker, you can change a person’s quality of life for new parents and babies, or adults facing medical decisions.
There are some unusual areas you could also go into with the right specialties and training. If you want to work with infants, you may find being a mid-wife fulfilling. Many second-career nurses combine their old careers with their nursing career to open new doors. Someone who was into law may decide to go into the medical law field. Someone who is interested in medicine and also teaching may go into the community to teach children about chronic illness.
There is no limit to the many jobs open to someone who chooses to pursue nursing. Choosing nursing as a second career can open even more options. Though it may be your second attempt at a career, it may end up be something of permanence.
